   The Unity Gardens is a local non-profit dedicated to connecting our community to fresh produce, nature and each other, through 35 open gardens, free classes, and other programs.Sara’s expertise includes communications, publications, media coordination, public relations, development, public speaking, volunteer coordination, grant writing, accounts payable and receivable, compliance, business administration, and working with the garden team. She serves as an executive director and works in conjunction with the garden manager as the hub of communication between the various Unity Garden leaders and collaborators. Her qualifications include 16 plus years in business administration in the community health setting, specializing in third party health care reimbursement and Medicaid. Her role as a Professor of Community Health Nursing in conjunction with her research focus on the culture of socio-economic status and poverty facilitates her entry into a variety of cultures. Congruent with her role as a public health nurse, Ms Stewart assesses the systems that will promote the health of the community and intervenes through the gardens to assure public access to fresh produce.The story of the gardens and how so many within this community have led the change to create this food safety net, is something we need to replicate. With obesity rates skyrocketing, generations being increasingly disconnected with their natural environment and sustainability initiatives all national priorities, the Unity Gardens story is one that needs to be shared.Ms. Stewart received her BSN from DePauw University and her MSN from Bethel College.
