ABOUT SARA KHORSHIDIFARD

I am a community design leader, design researcher, and urbanist. I am the director of a planning and design outreach center, and a tenured and promoted associate professor of architecture. In my director and a previous project managing capacities, I lead participatory design, research, and outreach – initiating and mediating projects, securing grants and funding, involving diverse arrays of people, and managing planning and design visioning processes in collaboration with several city, town, neighborhood, and nonprofit interest groups. My 15+ years of co-creative practice is informed by research skills cultivated in academia. Combined with another five years of prior architectural design practice internationally, my experiences give me a unique collaborative outlook and practical edge towards the design process. I am an integrative analyst and an agile synthesist. Intuitively comfortable with the complexities and diversities inherent in design inputs and ideas, I am adept at intelligibly distilling diversified views into concise actionable insights. My skill set combines cross-disciplinary knowledge – fusing professional credentials in architecture and landscape architecture, trainings in master planning, design games and charrette strategies, and commitments to the triple bottom line of sustainability and ecological practice. I taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses in three higher education institutions in areas of community design, architectural design, urbanism, global studies, cultural studies, thesis research, architecture theory, and computer-aided design. My research has examined synergistic interplays between intentionally designed and socially constructed spaces, rooted in qualitative, empirical and interpretive methodologies prioritizing fieldwork. I have disseminated scholarship in ~100 peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, popular press essays, invited talks, symposia, and workshops. What keeps me up is meshing my perspectives and capabilities as leader, designer, researcher, and educator in high potential projects calibrated to address wickedest problems cities face at junctures of climate change and social divisions.
