Hi I’m Sara - a recent VCU graduate with B.S. degrees in Biology, Psychology, and General Science! ‍What Now? • I am taking a well deserved gap year to explore both science and medicine before starting my doctorate in Pharmacology & Toxicology this upcoming fall, 2023! • I am continuing to contribute to science as a researcher/laboratory technician within the School of Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University. • I am learning techniques that can be used to evaluate therapeutics aimed to treat chronic pain in the mouse model that I intend to utilize in my future studies. My Aspirations • I want to drive change and make the world a better place. To me, this means innovating new ways to benefit science for the community. • I want to keep learning and growing both my interpersonal and technical skills so that I can strive to be the most successful version of myself. • A goal of mine is to earn my PhD and to facilitate research in an academic setting. Currently conducting research under PI M. Imad Damaj with specialization in pain/behavior assays in nicotine addicted mice. • Responsibilities: lab management and organization of substances, care of mice facilities and health treatment, performing designated experiments and collecting/analyzing behavioral data for PhD and Master’s students’ projects, gave regular summaries of department accomplishments during lab meeting.• Skills/Techniques: i.p. & s.c. injections, cannabinoid tetrad assay (tail-flick, bar test, locomotor assay, and temperature), von Frey, acetone and Nesting assays, mouse dissections (brain, spinal cord, sciatic nerve, paws), immunohistochemistry, lipid extraction and quantitation (LC-MS), QPCR, Nerve Conduction and data analysis (GraphPad Prism)
