ABOUT SAPNA ELIZABETH THOTTATHIL
I have dedicated my career to finding and supporting solutions to global environmental problems. I bring over 15 years of non-profit, start-up, academic, and public sector experience to environmental resource management and policy, food and agriculture, and climate and health issues. I am currently the Managing Director for the University of California’s new Center for Climate, Health and Equity, where I am managing a growing team and budget, and leading strategy development for long-term success of the Center. Prior to this, I was an Associate Director of Sustainability in the University of California’s Office of the President, and my portfolio included supporting sustainable foodservice, operationalizing carbon neutrality in health care operations, and developing policies around sustainable procurement, waste reduction, and minimizing pesticide use. I have worked on environmental policy for multiple organizations, from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to Health Care Without Harm, and have taught courses on global environmental politics for graduate and undergraduate students. I earned my BA from the University of Chicago, where I was awarded the Udall Scholarship for environmental leadership, before going on to receive an MSc from Oxford University and a PhD in Geography from the University of California-Berkeley, where I was the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship. I am the author of India’s Organic Farming Revolution: What it Means for Our Global Food System and editor of Institutions as Conscious Food Consumers: Leveraging Purchasing Power to Drive Systems Change. I am also proud to have served on and advised many Boards and organizations, including Pesticide Action Network, My Green Lab, Women’s Environmental Network, Real Food Challenge, Oakland Food Policy Council, Plant Based Foods Association, and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). I live in Oakland, California with my husband and three children. In my spare time, I enjoy raising chickens, identifying wildflowers and birds, hiking the high Sierras, and playing the piano with my kids.
