Sapan Gupta is Global General Counsel at ArcelorMittal, where he oversees the legal, compliance and corporate secretarial, and is a member of the Global Management Board. Sapan’s team of about 200 legal professionals supports employees of ArcelorMittal Group (Fortune 190/ Revenue: USD 68bn). Sapan is recognized for his strategic and commercial acumen, as well his ability in global legal arena.In his role as general counsel, Sapan has overseen the legal aspects of mergers and acquisitions, directed litigation strategies, and facilitated transformations in joint venture. In collaboration with our dynamic team, we\'ve built robust frameworks to support ArcelorMittal\'s objectives, ensuring legal excellence and contributing to the company\'s steadfast growth in the steel and mining industry.Sapan’s practice background encompasses significant expertise in industries including manufacturing, ports, power, renewables, mining, real estate, investment and consumer banking, debt capital markets and bankruptcy. Sapan has a proven track record of deal making underscored by exceptional negotiation abilities. Sapan has substantial experience in engaging with government entities and operates efficiently under pressure. Sapan builds strong relationships with both ultra-high net worth individuals and corporate stakeholders and has a talent for establishing and developing new teams. Sapan’s composed approach allows him to manage complexity and crises effectively, achieving results in high stakes multi- jurisdictional litigations. Before joining the ArcelorMittal Group, Sapan served as an Equity Partner and National Practice Head at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, one of the India’s leading law firms. While at Bajaj Finance (Mcap:US$45bn), he managed all legal affairs as first Chief Legal officer. Sapan’s career also includes positions at Tata Group, ICICI Bank, HSBC and Standard Chartered (Deputy Head of Legal-South Asia). Sapan boasts extensive global experience, having worked with the prominent US law firm Sidley Austin in New York. Beyond the United States, he has gained experience in India and London.Sapan is licensed to practice law in India as well as New York State.Repeatedly recognized for his professional achievements, Sapan has won accolades from IFLR The Legal 500, Chambers, Asia Law 500 and the Lawyer Hot 100. He proudly served as a member of the Legal Committee of the Indian Banks’ Association and as Chairman of the Mumbai Chapter for Young Indians at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) among various other roles within CII.
