As a Graduate Research Assistant at Kentucky State University, I am conducting field-based research focused on integrating agroforestry practices—specifically elderberry-based alley cropping—within horticultural systems. I focus on tree-crop interactions that influence plant growth and yield, and aim to provide insights into the key ecosystem services offered by integrated agroforestry systems. I also perform spatial (GIS) and economic analyses to assess the viability of such systems for small-scale farmers. In addition, I assist in soil health research, comparing agroforestry (elderberry-integrated) and non-agroforestry plots. Soil parameters such as active carbon, organic matter, and other micro and macro nutrients are analyzed to understand how the presence of elderberry affects soil health compared to open-field cropping systems. These insights contribute to developing more sustainable and resilient agricultural models.
