About Sandy Guadalupe Torrez Chávez
I am an international attorney licensed in Mexico and a recent LL.M. graduate in International and Comparative Law from The George Washington University Law School. I bring over a decade of experience working across immigration law, public international law, and women’s rights in the Americas. My work has focused on the protection of asylum seekers, immigrant women survivors, and victims of domestic and gender-based violence, with particular expertise in forced displacement, human trafficking, and smuggling. I am certified by UNITAR in Global Immigration, and my practice is grounded in intersectionality and gender studies, bringing a critical and human-rights-centered lens to legal advocacy. In the United States, I work on both humanitarian and business immigration matters, including employment-based visas, family-based petitions, asylum, deportation defense, waivers, and Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) cases. I am particularly experienced in drafting complex and persuasive U.S. immigration waivers.Beyond practice, I am a professional facilitator and an active member of CLADEM Mexico. I design and lead legal education workshops for nonprofits, universities, governmental institutions, and private sector clients, translating complex immigration and international law concepts into clear, practical guidance.I am also a published writer with The OpEd Project and Equality Now, where I contribute to advancing the rights of women and girls by amplifying marginalized voices on urgent global justice issues. My writing has been featured in high-profile media outlets.Previously, I served as a law clerk for the Democratic U.S. House Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on Immigration, and represented Mexican civil society before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in cases involving human rights violations by the Mexican government. I continue to advance the rights of immigrants and women survivors through legal practice, public discourse, and international human rights engagement.
