Samuel T. Livingston, Ph.D. is one of the Atlanta University Center’s outstanding professors. While serving at Morehouse College as Director of the African American Studies Program, he has been able to successfully rebrand that academic unit as the Africana Studies Department. Building on the strong foundation provided by founding Director, Dr. Marcellus C. Barksdale, he also increased overall course enrollment, increased the number and diversity of courses offered, reduced required matriculation hours from 57 to 36 credit hours and added Africana Studies courses to the General Education Program\'s First Year Experience and Core curriculum. Flourishing at Morehouse, he has gain invaluable experience as an Africana Studies scholar by designing curricula, faculty outreach or student programs in the Gullah-Geechee Heritage corridor, the Republic of Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Egypt, and the Senegalese Mouride Diaspora. A very stimulating lecturer and a superb teacher and mentor for the students who have been fortunate enough to have enrolled in his classes. One senior colleague said of him, “Out of all the Faculty members that I have worked with, I would rate him to be one of Morehouse College\'s most dedicated and gifted professors.” He strives to be highly collegial and willing to be supportive of his colleague’s and institution’s mission and programs. Another colleague praised his collegiality: “Whenever I have called upon him for advice and assistance, he has always been responsive and has made several recommendations for improving the quality and contents of the various Center programs. Livingston is dedicated to the proposition that Africana Studies must thrive at HBCUs in order for its students to thrive.
