ABOUT SAM KEYES
I am a UK and European Patent Attorney, and representative before the Unified Patent Court (UPC). My practice spans a wide range of patent work, with a particular specialism in oppositions before the European Patent Office (EPO), including appeals.I represent clients in the engineering, physics, and computing sectors, with particular experience in 4G / 5G telecommunications, medical devices, and digital image analysis. I am currently seconded part-time to the in-house patents department of a FTSE 100 company, where I provide counsel on freedom-to-operate matters. I also mentor trainees seeking to pass the European Qualifying Examination (EQE) to become representatives before the EPO.I joined the patent profession after a first career in multi-disciplinary bio-engineering research, applying advanced X-ray and neutron imaging methods to understand biological system dynamics and granular mechanics. I have substantial experience conducting fundamental research, with findings published in leading academic journals. I have also taught engineering courses to undergraduates, and supervised multidisciplinary research at both MSc / MEng and PhD level. Outside of my professional work I am a published columnist, essayist, poet, and photographer.
