ABOUT SAMUEL JOHNSTON

Dr Samuel Johnston is a Scientist at the National Physical Laboratory. NPL is the national metrology institute of the United Kingdom and is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate measurement standards, science and technology available. NPL was founded in 1900 with the mission of \"standardising and verifying instruments, for testing materials, and for the determination of physical constants.\" Samuel completed a PhD in Materials Science at the University of Manchester in 2023 and graduated with an integrated masters (MPhys) degree in physics from the same university in 2018. Samuel\'s research interests lie in the development and application of novel X-ray tomographic techniques. In the course of his PhD research, Samuel has explored the use of cutting edge X-ray characterisation methods, such as synchrotron X-ray diffraction computed tomography (XRD-CT), hyperspectral/colour imaging and digital tomosynthesis, for the non-destructive evaluation of advanced materials for aerospace, automotive, medical and nuclear applications. Alongside his research, Samuel is the Scientific Director and Co-Founder at Aletheia Imaging Solutions Ltd, a spin-out company from the University of Manchester. Aletheia offers a variety of patent pending 3D calibration targets, as well as sophisticated analysis software, capable of determining spatial resolution and measurement confidence in X-ray CT and is commercialising technology that Samuel co-invented during his PhD. Aletheia\'s technology aims to solve the problem posed by lack of measurement traceability that has long served as a barrier to the use of X-ray CT as a means to assure the integrity of additively manufactured components. As part of his role in Aletheia, Samuel participates as a member of ASTM task group 2 of committee E07 on nondestructive testing, where he advises on international standards in X-ray CT.
