29-Year-Old Defeats Two Sitting Councillors in Milton Council Race 2022MILTON, ON - Milton’s representation at Town Hall & Halton Regional Council will have a new face following Monday’s municipal elections. Sammy Ijaz won the contest for Ward 3 Regional Councillor with 38.13% of the vote, beating out 3-term incumbent Mike Cluett and 3-term town Councillor Rick Di Lorenzo.“I’m humbled to have been elected, in the race against well-respected incumbents. I’m proud to be a representative for all Ward 3 residents and reflect the growing diversity in our region. I hope to serve as a role model to other newcomers looking to give back to the community through public service,” Ijaz reflected.At 29 years old, Ijaz brings a fresh perspective to regional politics, but he’s not new to politics. Since 2019, Ijaz has been the Anchor of ‘House of Politics’ on Canada One TV. Through his work, he has openly challenged elected politicians of all levels on issues that matter most to the people of Milton. He also previously ran for regional council in 2018, placing second in his contest.Over the past eight years, Ijaz has witnessed explosive development in the Halton region. However, he’s noting that there have not been accompanying investments in infrastructure and services.“As a long-time Milton resident and champion for sustainable housing development, I’m committed to balancing population growth in Halton region while preserving the communities we call home. The people of Milton expect safe roads, green space and a flourishing small business community. I am dedicated to ensuring that the people of Milton enjoy these amenities for the generations to come,” said Ijaz.
