ABOUT SAM BEMMENT
I am an experienced multi-disciplinary engineer, equally happy in the boardroom, design office, workshop, or knee deep in mud holding a spanner*. I have worked across several sectors including oil and gas, entertainment and manufacturing, but have most recently found my niche in transportation engineering. Rail engineering, operations and maintenance formed core the topics of my PhD thesis. I have experience throughout the whole project life-cycle - in planning, bid writing and review, specification, contracting, design, build and testing, alongside the team and project management skills necessary to enable projects to deliver successfully. I have successfully written bids for over £3 million in funding, both as research grant applications and as industrial investment. I have worked across electronic, electrical, software, mechanical, and systems engineering. If I had to choose one discipline, however, I would say I’m probably an aeronautical engineer first and foremost, as despite never having worked in that industry, it was the subject of my first degree and is where most of my hobbies lie! Of the many great projects I have been lucky enough to be involved in, I take the greatest enjoyment in research, development and innovation. I like to work on novel ideas, concepts and technologies, coming up with solutions which have the potential to change the way we do things. My R+D work has won multiple awards, for the engineering itself, and for related papers and publications. I was named best young researcher in my chosen field in 2015. I have also been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to present complex topics to expert and lay audiences across the globe: at conferences, public and private events and at meetings from board level down to the ballast. My work travels have earned me sunburn, chilblains, and most importantly (and rather more permanently) an understanding of the sensitivities of working with other cultures. In my spare time I enjoy DIY, turning panel vans into houses-on-wheels then holidaying in them, and flying my self-maintained aircraft to ever further and more exciting destinations.*That\'s a wrench, for my American colleagues -)
