About Nubras Samayeen Ifla Asla Associate
Nubras Samayeen is a Ph.D. candidate in the joint program of Landscape Architecture and Architecture at the University of Illinois. Her research on Louis Kahn probes Western colonialism and modernism’s instrumentality in homogenizing history, tradition, and culture across the globe. She explores the relationship between architecture and landscape and investigates the construction of national identity through built forms After her undergraduate degree in architecture from Bangladesh, she completed dual master’s degrees in Architecture and Urban Design at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor with distinction. Her design career began at- Eisenman Architects, HOK (New York) and Zimmer-Gunsul-Frasca LLP (DC). At Illinois, she received the Dumbarton Oaks Fellowship, Kennedy and Feil Travel Awards, AAUW International fellowship New York and Washington DC as an architect and also taught at Howard University. At Illinois received the prestigious HRI (Humanities Research Institute) Fellowship 2020-21, Dumbarton Oak’s Garden and Landscape Studies Graduate Workshop Award (Harvard University. 2018); Kennedy and Feil Travel Awards (UIUC-2017); and AAUW (2018). Among her publications, “Re-Constructing ’71: The Visual Landscape of Bangladeshi Nationalism Today,” \"Post-71: Photographic Ambivalences, Archives, and the Construction of a National Identity of Bangladesh.\" “Space to Breathe: George Floyd, BLM plaza and the Monumentalization of Divided American Urban landscapes,” and “A Tale of Two Cities: Dhaka’s Urban Imaginary in 21st Century,” are the most recent ones. In addition to her publications, she received numerous national-international design-awards including runners-up in Future Legacies Design Competition (2017), Canada and first prize in Designing Conflict (2010) in Zurich, Switzerland.
