About Samantha Y.
A constantly curious, detail-oriented, highly motivated, independent, responsible, collaborative, productive, efficient, and committed Postdoctoral Scholar at UChicago conducting rigorous and reproducible research in women\'s cancers, who loves to multitask. I am a current member of the Hernandez Laboratory.During my childhood, I grew up as a multi-sport student-athlete which fostered productivity and efficiency as two strengths. Planning ahead was engrained in my brain, as my parents would only let me attend my brother\'s hockey games if I finished my homework early and with quality. My love for science began during high school because of my enthusiastic biology teacher and personal experience with an ovarian cyst. I began to question why it developed and how we could determine whether the cyst was cancerous or not without surgery as a means- I now have 4 permanent scars. My curiosity, innovation and passion brought me to UT Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, TX for 2 years as a research assistant, and 5 years at UT Health San Antonio for my Ph.D. In my free time, I was a member of the UT Health San Antonio Student Government Association and I was the 20••••21 President of all 5 schools (Dental, Medicine, School of Health Professions, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and Nursing). This allowed me to work inter-professionally with the students as inter-professionalism is essential. I also worked collaboratively with faculty, administration, staff and higher-ups to maintain a positive learning environment for the student body. To this day, my passion is to better understand ovarian cancer using the tools we currently have, and identify and develop novel therapeutics by using ovarian cancer as a model to better elucidate the respective therapeutic\'s mechanism of action. I am a current NCI K00 fellow.
