Sam White is the founder of Shakespeare in Detroit, originally called Shakespeare Against Cancer (circa 2012) with roots that included performing vignettes of the bard\'s work in children\'s hospitals throughout Southeast Michigan. The organization evolved into its next iteration of public performances in 2013 when it pioneered the very first Shakespeare in the park experience in Detroit proper (circa 2013). Since then, the company has performed more than a dozen full-onstage professional productions and several special events, including its popular inebriated reading series. In 2019, SiD introduced its educational programming to Detroit schools via Shakespeare STEAM. The curriculum, researched, curated and authored by Sam White, teaches both vocational and artistic elements of theatre that include the Science of lighting a production, the Technology of sound design, the Engineering of costumes, the Art of classical performance and the Mathematics of set building. More than 1,500 students have received training or see the work by way of the STEAM program, including the more than one dozen youth who are accepted into SiD\'s yearly summer conservatory and who receive scholarships each for their participation. The success and impact of SiD has been covered everywhere from the pages of Southwest Airlines\' in-flight magazine to Forbes and several Metro Detroit media platforms. The company continues to scale its work, even during the pandemic, as it now has a six-figure yearly budget and recently established a permanent residence at the Marygrove Conservancy where it has its administrative office and costume shop. This is also where SiD hosts several performances/events and educational programming.
