ABOUT SAM TOMS
I bring together hands‑on geotechnical engineering experience and a background in full‑stack development - a combination that’s pretty uncommon in this field and something I’ve leaned on throughout nearly nine years at Stantec. Most geotechnical engineers don’t write Python, and most software developers don’t install strain gauges in pipeline trenches. I do both, and the overlap is where I do my best work. I design and deploy landslide monitoring systems for major pipeline clients - from physical sensor installation (inclinometers, ShapeArrays, piezometers, cellular telemetry) through to automated alerting, data pipelines, and client reporting. I\'m equally comfortable in a pipeline trench in Fort McMurray in +33°C heat and writing the Python that processes the data when I get back.A lot of what I do now I started pushing for as a co-op student. I advocated for digital field data collection before I was even hired full-time. Once I was, I built it - first in Kizeo Forms in 2018 as a proof of concept, then migrating to Esri Survey123 in 2023 with fully rebuilt, polished forms from scratch. The borehole logging form I built is now being adopted globally across Stantec\'s geotechnical practices.Similarly, I championed the gINT-to-OpenGround transition as far back as 2018, rebuilt consultant-delivered templates that fell short, and now lead the North America-wide rollout as a primary technical resource and trainer.For nearly four years I managed Stantec\'s Edmonton geotechnical and construction materials testing laboratory - a team of technologists, CCIL accreditation, end-to-end QA/QC proposals and project execution, and ASTM/CSA compliance across soil, asphalt, and concrete programs.I tend to become the person who gets called when something is technically hard and hasn\'t been solved yet.
