About Sam Rebello
My pursuit of science began during doctoral studies at the University of Illinois in unlocking the role of endothelin in cardiovascular regulation. This was fueled by a 3-year industry-sponsored, postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical School. My entrance into the industry was as a Pharmacologist in Rhone-Poulenc Rorer. Here, my team profiled PKPD of Klerval and Otamixaban as antithrombotic agents for Acute Coronary Syndrome. Then, a merger with Hoechst Marion Rousell formed Aventis, offering an opportunity to work in discovery DMPK support for multiple therapeutic areas. This resulted in an exciting 3-year assignment in Aventis France to lead a group of 25 associates in supporting discovery activities from the DMPK perspective. This was not only a professionally-rewarding experience, but also one of cultural enrichment. With the intention of learning more about late-stage development, I moved to Novartis to join the clinical PKPD group. Herein, I led a group of dedicated scientists in supporting projects from Phase 1 and beyond (NDA filings for combo products and Entresto®). I also led a preclinical group in implementing drug interaction and metabolism strategies by demonstrating clinical impact in development projects, and by influencing regulatory strategies. To experiment with biotech, I pursued a non-traditional path toward drug development at Axcella. Here, I built a Development Sciences group (Analytical Chemistry, DMPK, Toxicology and Clinical Pharmacology) to transition lead candidates into successful POC studies. Through the glorious 25+ years of my journey in pharma, from Drug Discovery to Development of diverse therapeutics, I still feel like a student of science, because human biology remains an unsolved mystery. At Eikon, we are leveraging Single Molecule Tracking to better understand the MOA. Won\'t it be nice if we could visualize drug-target interaction in a living cell? Seeing is believing!
