ABOUT SAM HOCKEY

If you ask my Mum what I do, she would say,\'he does sums for money\'.I\'ve always been interested in systems and how things fit together. I think that is why I enjoy working on investment strategies for DB pension schemes - I like working out how the liabilities and assets of a scheme hang together as well as how they fit in the wider economic landscape.I started my working life training as a pensions actuary at Watson Wyatt (now WTW) in Reigate. That was a great experience and gave me the opportunity to work with some of the biggest pension schemes in the country. From there, I got the chance to move out to Portugal and work in the brilliant valuations team out there. After a year and a half, I returned to the UK but this time to the Birmingham office. During this time, I worked on some really interesting and complex problems that needed me to think more about how the scheme was invested and what that meant for how it was funded.After 6 and a half years, I decided to move over to the investment side and took a job at Barnett Waddingham. I was surprised at how transferable the actuarial skills I had learnt were and quickly started taking on my own clients. The team here is fast growing, collaborative and keen to try new ideas. As well as client work, I help with finances across the wider practice area and well as supporting change projects across the business.I am also a member of our Gender Equality Network - one of six networks helping to shape what DEI means at Barnett Waddingham.Outside of work, most of my time is taken up with my two young kids. Since becoming a Dad in 2018, I have moved to four days a week so \'outside work\' typically also includes Thursdays!I\'m passionate about social mobility and inequality and support a number of charities trying to give people less fortunate the chance to access the services and institutions that can help them redress the imbalances caused simply by their particular accident of birth.(Views are my own)
