ABOUT SALMA ZEIN

Hello, I\'m Salma, a fourth year student at the University of Calgary studying Health and Society in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program. I am excited to have a career in public health and medicine.I have various academic, research, and community leadership experiences which make me stand out. Academics: I have completed and excelled in courses like health science research methods, independent studies, health services and systems, social determinants of health, and biostatistics. I have written papers on relevant topics such as diabetic retinopathy, schistosomiasis (neglected tropical diseases), visual impairment and blindness, and mental health among Indigenous communities in the Arctic. Research: I am a research student in the lab of Dr. Tanvir Turin Chowdhury, using community-engaged research practices to understand the health needs of visible minority populations. My research project focuses on equitable and empowered access to primary care in Canada among Egyptian immigrant women in Calgary.Community: I am passionate about serving my community and have many different community experiences with diverse populations, including visiting elderly patients at the hospital, presenting fun science demos to elementary-aged students at local elementary schools, mentorship, and volunteering with immigrant organizations.In my spare time, I love to draw, which shows an ability to have patience and attention to detail in all of my work.
