ABOUT SALMAN QURESHI

I’m an aspiring statistician and data scientist with a First-Class BSc in Mathematics and a Distinction in MSc Data Science from the University of Essex, with strong interests in statistics, machine learning, AI, and data-driven decision making.My academic journey has combined mathematical theory with practical analytical problem solving. During my undergraduate degree, I earned Dean’s List awards in both Year 1 and Year 2, achieving high marks in modules including Calculus (97%), Linear Programming (97%), and Statistics (90%). My final-year dissertation in Lie Algebra achieved 74%.During my MSc in Data Science, I specialised further in machine learning, statistical modelling, programming, and data visualisation. I achieved 89% in AI & Machine Learning for a CNN image classification project, 82% in Data Visualisation, 79% in SQL & Database Processing, 74% in Applied Regression & Experimental Data Analysis, and 69% in my dissertation focused on survival analysis of breast cancer patients using Cox Proportional Hazards models, Random Survival Forests, and DeepSurv neural networks on the METABRIC dataset.Technically, I’m confident working with Python, R, SQL, MATLAB, LaTeX, machine learning workflows, statistical modelling, and data visualisation tools. Over time, I’ve come to realise that data science is not just about coding or algorithms, but about understanding people and real-world systems through data.In 2026, I accepted an offer to join the Government Statistical Service (GSS) Fast Stream; a UK Civil Service graduate leadership programme focused on statistics, analysis, and evidence-based policymaking across government departments. The role feels like a natural fit for my background in mathematics, statistics, and data science, and I’m excited by the opportunity to continue developing technically and professionally while contributing to meaningful public-sector work.Alongside my academic work, I previously worked as a Technical Analyst within the renewable-energy sector, producing analytical reports and assessments for solar-energy projects. This strengthened my communication, problem-solving, and analytical thinking skills within professional environments.I’m always interested in connecting with people working across data science, statistics, AI, analytics, research, and public-sector analysis. I’m also open to opportunities where I can continue building practical analytical experience prior to beginning the GSS Fast Stream.
