ABOUT SALLY TURNBULL

An experienced Director of Strategic Planning, I currently undertake interim assignments and consultancy focused around strategy, planning, data, policy, governance and organisation.With ten years\' experience on the National Executive of the Higher Education Strategic Planners Association (HESPA) and as Chair the HESPA Higher Education Data Insight Group, I am familiar with the richness and diversity of UK higher education. I continue to support HESPA as a member of its Development Committee. Prior to working in higher education, I worked with the public, private and third sectors in economic regeneration, developing strategic responses to social challenges relating to housing, health and young people.Key experience/personal qualities include- Strategy development and implementation: significant experience of developing strategies and plans in a variety of contexts, underpinned by a strong ability to see the big picture and to translate this into the detail required for implementation. Resulting strategies and plans have led to focused improvement in key metrics, including student satisfaction- Highly data literate: able to use both qualitative and quantitative data to assess the current situation and identify future options and communicate this effectively to non-specialists. This recently enabled me to find and use evidence relating to graduate employment which boosted UCLan’s Teaching Excellence Framework rating to silver- Skilled in negotiation and persuasion: excellent interpersonal and communication skills, able to secure buy-in and influence others without recourse to formal authority- Consultative and collaborative: open to dialogue, debate and input from others, understanding that a collectively formed approach is usually much more effective than one developed in isolation- Creative approach to problem-solving – able to think beyond the obvious, coupled with a strong capacity to learn and master new areas of knowledge and skills quickly- Excellent organisational skills and a drive to see things through to completion and beyond – not just content with something being finished, but keen to see it working well. Transformed a highly siloed team focused purely on meeting deadlines into an open and collaborative team, focused on quality in addition to timeliness- Skilled in motivating staff and providing leadership to enable others to work to the best of their abilities.
