ABOUT SYEDA AKILA ALLY

I work, study, and volunteer around issues of health justice on a glo-cal scale. As a Bangladeshi medical student in the U.S, I am passionate about partnering with marginalized communities to design and implement interventions that combat health inequity. I intend to train in academic internal medicine providing trauma-informed care for all, especially refugees, immigrants, and survivors of gender-based violence. My mission has been cultivated by 8+ years of direct experience serving marginalized communities in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and Chicago. As an undergraduate student of neuroscience and gender studies at the University of Chicago, I developed an interest in combining policy and research to bring about social change. After college, I gained grant writing and public health work experience implementing projects that serve marginalized individuals, with a focus on food insecurity, housing as health, and wrap-around support for individuals experiencing homelessness and incarceration. During medical school, I nurtured my interests in research, medical education, and advocacy, receiving specialized training through the national Schweitzer Fellowship, national AMWA Carter Global Health Fellowship, and Global Medicine, and Patient-Centered Medicine curricular tracks. Secured institutional and NIH grant funding to conduct research in medical education, global health, and hematology/oncology Represented student interests, especially around wellness and health equity as an elected board member of my university\'s student government, the National Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association, and the National American Medical Women\'s Association Engaged in longitudinal service to immigrant communities through the Schweitzer service-learning Fellowship, UIC\'s student-run free clinic, and health fairs Advocacy at the local and national level through the American College of Physicians Pan-Asian Affinity Group and the American Medical Association Minority Issues CommitteeConnect with me:
