About Saju Joy
Saj Joy, MD, MBA, MS, FAAPL is Chief Executive Officer of MUSC Health Charleston Division, leading one of the Southeast’s most complex academic health systems. He oversees teammates delivering care across five Charleston hospitals, community hospitals, rehabilitation services, and more than 300 ambulatory locations, serving nearly 6 million patients annually and supporting the education of 3,200 students and residents and fellows. As a member of the MUSC Health Executive Council, he is accountable for strategy, operations, quality, finance, capital development, growth, and culture.Previously, Dr. Joy served as Senior Vice President, System Chief Medical Officer, and Chief Physician Executive at Baptist Memorial Health Care, a 24‑hospital nonprofit health system across Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas. He led enterprise-wide improvements in quality, safety, patient experience, provider engagement, regulatory compliance, and operational performance, while also overseeing a $450M physician enterprise of more than physicians and advanced practice providers. Earlier roles at Atrium Health included Facility Executive (President), Central Division Chief Medical Officer, and hospital Chief Medical Officer, where he led high-performing organizations with national quality and patient experience recognition.An academic physician leader by training, Dr. Joy is a Clinical Professor at MUSC and has held faculty and leadership roles at Wake Forest University, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, Atrium Health, and UNC‑Chapel Hill. His scholarly work includes 28 peer‑reviewed publications, book chapters, and national presentations. He holds engineering degrees from North Carolina State University, an MD from UNC‑Chapel Hill, completed residency at the University of Florida Health Sciences Center Jacksonville, fellowship training at The Ohio State University, and earned an MBA from Duke University. He serves on multiple boards, including the American Association of Physician Leadership, Duke University School of Nursing, Jackson + Coker, and several health system and community organizations.
