About Sai Bathina
I build and lead teams that deliver the infrastructure behind frontier AI.I’m a Director of Software Engineering at Meta, leading the Storage & Databases organization. My teams build and operate the data plane—exabyte-scale storage systems and platforms—that power AI research, large-scale model training, and data-intensive products across Meta’s global fleet. At frontier scale, training and inference are ultimately infrastructure problems: data access, throughput, tail latency, reliability, checkpointing, and operational rigor determine iteration speed and GPU utilization. My work sits directly in that critical path.Selected AI infrastructure initiatives• Global Data Fabric – Led development of a next-generation data platform providing high-performance, consistent data access across regions and environments, supporting GPU clusters and large-scale production systems worldwide.• Managed AI Training Storage – Delivered storage services purpose-built for large-scale training workloads, enabling efficient shuffling, sharding, and checkpointing for massive datasets while simplifying researcher workflows.• Operational excellence at scale – Established reliability and performance programs to support rapid growth in AI workloads, including capacity planning, incident reduction, observability, and continuous performance tuning.Previously, I was Head of Engineering for Elastic Load Balancing at AWS, where I led the development and scaling of highly-available cloud infrastructure services used by customers globally. I’m experienced in operating mission-critical systems where correctness, resilience, and performance are non-negotiable.Earlier in my career, I spent nearly a decade at Dell SecureWorks, leading engineering across intrusion prevention and web application firewall systems and helping drive the transition from appliance-based security to cloud security platforms. I’m also an inventor on USPTO 99•••00 (cloud-based security).I’m known for:• Building and scaling high-performing teams (hiring, org design, coaching, talent density)• Driving architecture and execution under ambiguity• Bridging research and production to accelerate iteration speed safely• Delivering systems that are fast, reliable, and operable at massive scale
