About Ryan Thomas Chammany Nishan
As a student at Penn State University, I am pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biobehavioral Health with a focus on preparing for a future in Physician Assistant studies. My academic and extracurricular experiences have allowed me to develop a strong foundation in health sciences, research, and patient-centered care. As a Learning Assistant for Anatomy and Physiology I and II, I honed my skills in mentoring, communication, and teaching by guiding peers through complex scientific concepts, hosting office hours, and collaborating with instructors to address student learning needs. In addition to my teaching experience, I conduct research in the Cognitive Neuroscience of Eating and Obesity (CogNEATO) Lab, led by a principal investigator and assistant research professor of nutritional sciences. The lab investigates neurocognitive, environmental, and behavioral mechanisms that contribute to pediatric obesity risk or resiliency. My responsibilities include collecting and organizing experimental data, analyzing behavioral and neurocognitive outcomes, and contributing to interdisciplinary research projects aimed at understanding and addressing childhood obesity. This experience has strengthened my analytical, problem-solving, and scientific reasoning skills while providing hands-on exposure to research at the intersection of nutrition, cognition, and public health.I have also gained hands-on public health and global health experience through participation in Global Brigades in Ghana, where I co-led educational presentations for communities and schools to promote health awareness and disease prevention. Additionally, my involvement with THON has strengthened my skills in teamwork, fundraising, and community engagement, supporting pediatric cancer research and patient care initiatives. These experiences have reinforced my passion for improving health outcomes, supporting patients and communities, and applying both scientific knowledge and compassionate care in clinical settings. I am committed to furthering my education and training to make a meaningful impact as a future healthcare professional, with a focus on promoting wellness, patient education, and equitable access to healthcare.
