About Ryan Mehlem
I\'m an aspiring physician-scientist with a passion for translational research, patient care, and education.In the lab, I’ve led independent projects in both fungal drug resistance and gene therapy. In the Dhingra Lab, I study the genetic basis for triazole tolerance in Aspergillus fumigatus. I have presented regionally and locally and was honored as a Seifert Scholar. In the Cottle Lab, I am developing an AAV-based ex vivo editing strategy for a cell therapy for familial hypercholesterolemia as part of my departmental honors thesis, presenting nationally and internationally. This summer, I’m continuing this trajectory as an Amgen Scholar at UNC Chapel Hill, studying AAV capsid biology and epigenetic modulation.Outside the lab, I founded and lead ARCS-Ed, a nonprofit bringing hands-on STEM outreach to underserved rural middle schoolers across South Carolina.
