Co-teaching course on civil RICO with fellow Sharp Law partner, Ryan Hudson. In the course, we examine an explosion in cases filed under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), from the perspective of litigation practitioners who have defended and brought civil RICO class actions. The statute provides private parties with a right of action to seek automatic treble damages for statutory violations that caused damages to their business or property. The RICO statute is complex and hard to decipher. We work through the statute, element by element, by analyzing recent case law and actual filings from cases litigated by the professors of the course.
