Taken from Mind Bio:Having previously completed marathons to raise money for other causes, Ruth’s natural response to her grief following a family bereavement was to sign up to a physical fundraising challenge, so she took on the London to Brighton Ultra Marathon, choosing Mind as her charity. But despite raising a whopping £4,500, she felt no better. With her 40th birthday approaching, and painfully aware that her cousin Ged, who’s memory she was marking with her running, wasn’t here to celebrate his, she hatched a new fundraising idea: her ‘£40k before 40 Challenge’. This would be a series of personal challenges and fun events before she reached 40, including wreath-making sessions, curry nights, physical endurance events, a skydive and a charity ball. It culminated in an event involving 95 people, including her six-year-old daughter Zoe. Ruth smashed her target, so far raising almost While she is thrilled with her total, for her the biggest achievement is that her challenge has instigated countless invaluable conversations with friends and family around their mental health. It has given her a way to connect with others, and it has given her hope. Ruth works in student support and sees young people struggling with their mental health on a daily basis. She has also experienced workplace stress and a difficult postnatal period in which she was also coming to terms with the loss of Ged. She speaks very highly of Mind’s online resources, having used them herself and pointed numerous other people towards them. She also speaks very positively about the support she has received from Mind during her fundraising challenge.
