The last few years have not been exactly the best that the offshore industry has known. Low rates for vessels trickle down through the service vessels, crew rates and, inevitably to consultants. Despite that, we have managed to score some hits, we performed a major incident investigation for a national oil company and helped it develop new guidance for offshore vessels, we assisted Bourbon in the developent of their smart ship programme, the work we performed here provided the framework on which Kongsberg\'s remote auditing system is based. What I do today is a synthesis of what has gone before. If you can put a dynamic positioning system on it I\'m there to tell you how it can go wrong and what to do about it. If you read this from the bottom up, you will notice that my achievements undergo a pronoun evolution, this is probably the most important thing of all to note in my resume. I have a lot of experience, but it has been accumulated with, and through, the experience and accomplishments of others. I make no claim to omniscience. Overture There was never any plan. Emily Levine said that fantasies are the same as goals but without the hard work. That probably sums it up. I grew up in Lytham St Annes, Blackpool’s staid sister, I suspect it was the catalyst of drabness that made me decide to run away to sea. Hating every day of my 12 years of schooling, I was a classic underachiever. I became a Radio officer to see the world without getting my hands dirty - before my first ship passed Liverpool bar I was vomiting profusely, I didn\'t stop for the next 17 years. Since then, I have leveraged my natural ineptitude into a career in failure analysis on DP systems - Dress Rehearsal A chance encounter introduced me to the possibility of becoming a Radio officer in the Merchant Navy. I wanted to work for any company except Marconi Marine. In 1976 I joined it. From 1976 to 1979 I sailed on a variety of ships from coastal trades to bulk carries and cable repair before I was offered the chance to take a marine electronics course. Following a stint on an LPG carrier (don\'t let anyone tell you that ammonia is benign), and then, due to a complete misunderstanding, I found myself taking a DP maintenance course in late 1982. I discovered something novel: dynamic positioning interested me- Openers and Beginners I worked on DSVs, cable layers, heavy lift vessels, drilling rigs and by 1997 I landed a job commissioning the most interesting project of the day: the rocket launch platform, Sea launch Odyssey- ACT 1 Summoned to Houston to consult on a series of DP drilling rigs which were never built, I began a DP and FMEA consultancy which (to no one’s surprise more than my own) grew from the US Gulf to South East Asia, India, UAE and Brazil. Along the way, I even taught DP. I hope I didn’t bore my students too much- ACT 2 Has not yet been written. But I still harbour fantasies- Encore But, much as I like the subject, enough of me what about you?
