About Rumen Z.

I’m a Chinese-American fashion photographer, where my personal experiences and history serve as both an anchor and an echo, informing a practice rooted in introspection, emotional subtlety, and quiet observation. My images exist in the liminal space between presence and absence, where the form becomes a vessel for subconscious memory and lived experience. Through the techniques of motion blur, layered exposures, and multiple stages of abstraction, I dissolve the boundaries of the photographic image, creating scenes that hover between intimacy and curiosity. Influenced by surrealism and contemporary image making, these photographs linger in states of solitude and suspended time, inviting viewers to dwell within their quiet tension. Photography becomes a contemplative ritual, one that traces the shifting fragments of identity as they surface, fade, and reform. My images begin with the body in motion, a gesture, a fall, a turn, and end somewhere else entirely. Fabric enters the frame as a second skin, moving with and against the body, catching light, resisting gravity. Through an extended process of digital manipulation within the camera and in post, I dissolve the documentary moment into something unmoored from its origin. What remains is not a record of movement but a residue: a visual echo, like a garment after it has been worn, holding the trace of motion without the body itself. I’m drawn to the tension between presence and disappearance. The figure appears and recedes, recognizable in fragments, the curve of a spine, the blur of an outstretched hand, the pull or collapse of fabric, before dissolving into fields of color, texture, and light. The body becomes a landscape, becomes weather, becomes pure form. My transformation is not erasure; it is a translation. The body and its coverings are reconfigured into an image, preserving something essential about physical experience while releasing it from the obligation to remain legible. I think of these works as asking what a body and what a garment look like when freed from their assigned functions and symbolic roles. The processing itself becomes a choreography, an improvised response to what the camera initially captured. Each photograph passes through multiple stages of abstraction, layering and unraveling like fabric under tension, until it arrives at a point of balance, still tethered to its source, yet no longer bound by it. I stop when the image feels inevitable, when it could not have come from anywhere else and yet belongs entirely within itself.
