ABOUT RIČARDS UMBRAŠKO
I am a senior at Harvard College pursuing a bachelor\'s degree in Slavic Languages & Literatures and Comparative Literature. I study Eastern European cultures from the nineteenth century to the present and contemporary Ukrainian literature. My research spans the fields of comparative post-Soviet border(land) studies, cultural history, and de/postcolonial criticism. Broadly, I explore how identities and senses of belonging have been constructed, negotiated, and mediated in the Ukrainian and Latvian borderlands in imperial, Soviet, and post-Soviet contexts. I have previously covered Eastern European and Baltic politics, culture, and society for several publications, including The Economist and New Eastern Europe. I work in Latvian, Ukrainian, and Russian, and I read Old Church Slavonic and German.
