ABOUT ROSANNE CASEY

Teaching Philosophy My teaching philosophy stems from the foundation of my nursing practice and my approach to my role as a nurse leader. The culmination of these two, in addition to my personal experiences as a first generation American and college graduate allow me to connect and effectively work collaboratively towards the growth and development of my students and nurses. Mentorship plays a key part with an emphasis on professionalism and accountability. Integrating evidence-based and critical thinking practices, along with real life scenarios and case-studies into the classroom helps to build the comprehensive foundation of nursing that each student needs to not only successfully transition into practice but become experts in their specialty of choice. My nursing practice reflects Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring which states that “Caring begins with being present, open to compassion, mercy, gentleness, loving kindness, and equanimity toward and with self before one can offer compassionate care to others “. When our practice encompasses making those connections with our patients, meeting them where they are, and being authentically present, that is how we can help them on their healing journey. The role of the nurse is unique. We are the one person that is with the patient, 24 hours a day. It is a relationship. It is special. If we approach the care we give through this lens, we will have the most impact. As an actively working nurse leader, I have a unique perspective to share. Incorporating strong values that include professionalism and accountability, is something I bring to the classroom. My approach to my role as a nurse leader combines two styles of leadership. I consider myself a Transformational Leader, leading by example with inspiration, motivation and innovation. Developing lifelong learners who focus on quality, safety and the dissemination and synthesis of evidenced based practice while being culturally aware. The second is that of a Relational Leader. With a focus on shared goals, cultivating teams by building trust, collaboration and meaningful connections. Along with mentorship, these are essential to developing nursing students into professional nurses and novice nurses into experts. A first generation American, college graduate, and a minority, I have always felt that that the ability to reflect, engage and inspire the people I care for & teach was important. A love for the nursing profession and the development of students and young nurses is weaved into my daily work and something I hope to continue to share.
