ABOUT ROOPA MODEM
Good decisions come from good thinking. Good thinking comes from data. And data, in the wrong hands, is just noise. That belief has shaped everything I do — and it did not come from a classroom. My career began in dentistry. Not because I planned to stay, but because it taught me something no textbook could — that systems either protect people or fail them, and the difference almost always comes down to how organisations manage their people and decisions. That insight followed me from a clinic in Visakhapatnam to a public hospital in Kingston, Jamaica, where I worked with a multinational medical team and watched how culture shapes care. Then to a mobile hospital in Puttaparthi. Then into hospital quality management — two years building systems, writing SOPs, and preparing organisations for NABH audits. Somewhere in all of that, I realised the real question was never clinical. It was organisational. Why do some teams perform and others collapse? Why do careers stall even when talent does not? I went back to study those questions seriously. A PhD in HR. Eight published papers. 118 citations. Research on organisational politics, knowledge management, career growth, and leadership — not as abstract theory, but as explanations for things I had watched happen in real organisations. Then I started teaching — three years of MBA and PGDM students, helping them think analytically and use data as a decision-making tool. Power BI. Tableau. SPSS. Not as software training. As a way of seeing. That work extended beyond my classroom. I have been invited as a Resource Person for FDPs at the University of Hyderabad, Christ University, REVA University, and Jain University — and as Guest Faculty at Nitte and Manipal Academy. And then I started building. Today I am developing AI-powered HR tools from the ground up — an automated CV screening pipeline, a LinkedIn profile analyser, and a voice agent for HR — using n8n, ElevenLabs, Docker, Supabase, and GCP. From a dental chair in Visakhapatnam to agentic AI pipelines in Hyderabad — every step has been the same question, asked at greater depth: How do we make organisations work better for the people inside them? That is still the only question I am trying to answer.
