   Same job working on database systems and helping grow the business I’m now accountable for the organization that does end-to-end work on engines in both EMR and Athena like Spark, Trino, Hive, Flink and HBase. The most challenging and fun part of the work is to figure out how to build differentiation in the query engines while contributing to Open Source, keeping up with their fast version releases and making it work on EC2, EKS and our serverless control planes. My org is responsible for compiler, QE/QO, Shuffle, Query acceleration, caching, Resource Manager integration, federation, s3 storage (including table formats like iceberg, hudi and delta) and Hadoop services (like YARN and HDFS) Amongst the most notable differentiations:* Spark performance and reliability improvements * Trino performance and reliability improvement * Instant-on serverless Spark on Athena * Caching capabilities (query and sub-query)* Fine grain access control implementation * First cloud provider supporting Iceberg * Optimized federated connectors and table format connectors (eg hudi and delta)* And many others improvements on Hive, Hbase, Flink and Hadoop.
