ABOUT RONALD NGUYEN
As a dual-degree undergraduate at UC Irvine studying Biomedical Engineering and Biological Sciences, my academic and research journey centers around the topics of immunoengineering, biomaterials, and translational medicine where my passion lies in investigating how different mechanical or chemical cues could influence immune cells in the application of wound healing and the foreign body response. In the Liu Lab, I investigate how different biomaterial properties modulate macrophage behavior both in-vitro and in-vivo using Piezo1 WT and KO mice. My work has given me the opportunity to engage with in-vivo surgical models, hydrogel synthesis, histological staining, cell culture, and experiment design aimed at immunomodulation. Through fellowships like UROP and E-SURP, I have learned a wide range of experimental skills including western blotting, ELISA, qPCR, confocal imaging, flow cytometry, and small-animal surgery, as well as developed the confidence to share my findings at academic symposiums and conferences. Beyond immunology, I have collaborated with the BioMINT Lab and CADMIM to engineer PDMS microfluidic chips for intracellular delivery systems as well as develop real-world impact medical device innovations, where I have worked alongside Christine King on designing an IV securement device to improve pediatric safety. As a leader in the Engineering Student Council, and mentor/researcher in the Liu Lab, I am committed to bridging disciplines to translate discoveries to real-world solutions. Looking ahead, I plan to pursue an MD where I seek to merge the clinical rigor of medicine with the curious spirit of research to advance solutions in translational medicine while specializing in immunology.Thank you for your time reading about my journey!
