About Christopher Romero
Christopher Romero is an aspiring physician whose trajectory into medicine has been shaped by direct, long-term engagement with the healthcare system outside traditional academic settings. Accumulating over hours of clinical experience, he began his work in patient care by assisting his own family in navigating structural and financial obstacles to adequate treatment. These formative experiences have informed his sustained focus on equity and accessibility in healthcare delivery. His clinical roles have included work in emergency departments, perioperative environments, and ambulatory care, affording him a comprehensive view of the patient care continuum. In parallel with his clinical work, Christopher has pursued research in computational neuroscience and bioinformatics, contributed to investigations in human-computer interaction at NASA, and participated in health policy initiatives targeting service gaps in marginalized populations. Identifying as biracial, queer, first-generation, and neurodivergent, Christopher brings an intersectional perspective to medicine that is grounded in personal experience with exclusionary systems. His professional objectives center on integrating patient-facing practice with systemic reform—particularly in areas where technological development, policy, and clinical care converge. His goal is not only to advance medical innovation, but to ensure that such progress is equitably distributed and responsive to the needs of historically underserved communities.

Chair, Evaluation & Planning, Florida Rehabilitation Council
Jun 2023 — Present · Tallahassee, FL, US
At Nicklaus Children’s, I encountered families struggling to navigate complex administrative systems for essential services. The insistence of one mother, whose child was among four million eligible Floridians yet received no support, crystallized the problem: eligibility did not guarantee access. Her situation revealed a systemic disconnect between policy and practice. This insight motivated me to pursue systemic change, leading to my gubernatorial appointment as chair of the state’s disability council. My work focuses on developing the infrastructure that allows healthcare to be effective beyond the clinical setting.Vocational rehabilitation (VR) is a central component of this mission. Over the past year, the Council has improved VR by increasing wages for frontline staff while expanding the scope and accessibility of services. We secured $13.1 million for the ArtCIE initiative to create career opportunities in the arts, replacing sub-minimum wage employment. The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model was extended to four additional cities to integrate mental health and job training. Furthermore, a partnership with Raytheon expanded Work-Based Learning Experiences (WBLE), increasing participation by 3% and equipping over 4,400 individuals with marketable skills. Participation in Workplace Readiness Training increased by 25%, enabling more than Floridians to develop sustainable careers. These statistics represent significant improvements in economic and personal autonomy for individuals with disabilities. This experience has affirmed my conviction that health outcomes are fundamentally shaped by the surrounding socioeconomic systems. Effective medical practice requires an understanding of these systemic factors and a commitment to addressing the policies that create barriers to well-being.
