About Nicholas Romanello
PRAGMATIC COUNSELOR TO HEALTHCARE SYSTEMSNicholas Romanello serves as the EVP, Chief Legal Officer for Health First. His primary responsibility is to provide effective and cost efficient counsel on a wide array of legal and operational issues confronting this fully integrated clinical network. Additionally, he provides executive leadership and strategic direction to Health First’s compliance, internal audit, privacy and enterprise risk management functions.Previously Romanello served as the General Counsel and Chief Legal Officer of the Health Care District of Palm Beach County. He rejoined the Health Care District in 2012 after serving as General Counsel for the Florida Department of Health. Earlier in his career Romanello served as counsel to the fifth largest, public hospital system in the U.S. where he provided advice and counsel on a variety of healthcare related matters. Romanello provides regulatory and strategic advice to healthcare systems on:• Hospital operations and transactions including physician practice acquisition, hospital-physician relationships, development of structures for participation in innovated reimbursement models and internal compliance investigations.• Outside counsel oversight: Select, monitor and evaluate work and expenditures for outside counsel. • Government and regulatory affairs, particularly regarding the Affordable Care Act and physician self-referral laws.• Risk management – identifying, mitigating and financing health system risk.INNOVATIVE EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIPIn addition to managing legal affairs, Romanello is experienced in leading multiple operational teams designing efficient and proactive processes to improve productivity. With a track record of significant operational accomplishments, Romanello was appointed Interim CEO of the Health Care District in July 2015. Nicholas currently serves on the Florida Board of Medicine and is a frequent commentator on legal, regulatory and public policy topics.
