About Rohith Giridhar

Introduction:I am a PhD Candidate in the Aerospace Engineering Department at The University of Kansas, Lawrence. I have a combination of experience in Computational Fluid Dynamics (7+ years) & Experimental Measurements used to investigate the role of passive compliant coatings in mitigating flow induced noise. Computational Studies:I have employed the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings model to predict farfield trailing-edge noise and the two-way coupling Fluid Structure Interaction technique (FSI) to simulate compliant coating deformation using a morphing mesh. I have proven skills in leveraging CFD to help GARMIN LTD. position AoA (angle of attack) ports on an air data probe.Experimental Studies:My PhD Dissertation has also given me the opportunity to gain hands on experience in wind tunnel testing to record flow and noise measurements. Through my role as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in KUAE, I have gained background in calibrating load cells to evaluate motor and engine performance for UAV applications.PhD Dissertation:Investigating the effects of Passive Compliant Coatings on Trailing-edge NoiseA brief description of this research:My research investigates the noise mitigation potentials of homogeneous visco-elastic passive compliant coatings through Computational Aeroacoustics Analysis (CAA) and experimentation through wind tunnel testing. When installed closer to residential areas, noise generated by wind turbine rotors cause annoyance and sleep disturbance to people living in its vicinity. Mitigating this noise would make their installation closer to residential areas admissible, thus opening more avenues for wider spread of wind power applications. Similarly, mitigating propeller noise in UAVs would be useful for stealth applications in the military or for commercial applications, such as drone deliveries.It is hypothesized that this aerodynamic noise may be mitigated using passive compliant coatings. An aeroacoustic simulation was performed to study the effects of passive compliant coatings on trailing-edge noise. Modelling of the elastomer\'s behavior when it interacts with the impinging wind involves complex interaction between the two, and thus fluid-structure interaction technique (FSI) was employed to perform this study. In addition to these computational studies, we have developed a prototype of passive compliant coating and are currently performing experiments to investigate the effects of compliant coatings on flow boundary layer and trailing-edge noise through wind tunnel testing.
