ABOUT ROGER OBRIEN

Roger is the Engineering Design Manager for Tekmar Energy Ltd, based in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, part of the Tekmar group of companies. Here he manages the Engineering Team to deliver timely support to Sales, Project Execution, strategic product development and general improvement initiatives, aligned to business objectives and target KPIs. This includes planning, resourcing, and management of a multi-discipline engineering team to ensure that capability and capacity is constantly reviewed and developed in line with market demands.Previously, Roger was Director of AMAP,(The Institute for Automotive and Manufacturing Advanced Practice) at the University of Sunderland, having spent over 20 years in senior positions at a large multi-national stamping and fabricator within the global Tier 1 automotive supply chain. During his time at AMAP he developed and lead the highly successful Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing (SAM) Project, a £10.9m ERDF funded project supporting NE based manufacturing SMEs with their product and process innovation. In addition, he delivered Manufacturing Digital Transformation support on the Made Smarter NE program in conjunction with NELEP. He was also Team Principal for the University’s own Formula Student racing team, Sun Racing.Along with his background in R&D, Design and Manufacturing, he has significant experience of project management, change management, leadership, and people management, as well as the more obvious technical aspects of engineering roles within a modern manufacturing and high volume environment, including automation and robotics. His career has given him considerable experience of international business not just in most major European economies but in the likes of USA, Japan, China and India. He began his career in the power generation and transmission industry as a student apprentice, before specialising in product design and development, including simulation and analysis.He holds a First Class Honours Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Newcastle University, a Master of Science degree from Durham University.
