Doing applied research and conservation planning for ecosystem restoration and endangered species recovery as a consultant for the National Park Service, state natural resource agencies, The Nature Conservancy, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, Audubon, Natural Lands, and other nongovernmental organizations involved in wildland restoration and management in the Mid-Atlantic region.Research interests include: global biodiversity patterns; forest ecology; successional positive feedbacks and alternative stable states in ecological communities; persistent grasslands and shrublands in temperate forest ecoregions; fire ecology; serpentine (ultramafic) barrens and other examples of bedrock influence on terrestrial plant community assembly.
