About Rodney J. Petersen
Rodney Petersen is retired and spending more time with family, deepening his faith, volunteering in the community, and pursuing exercise and recreational interests. He is also pursuing his passion of playing more golf and works part-time at the Hobbits Glen and Fairway Hills golf clubs in Maryland.He returned to government service in 2015 after 25 years of higher education administration, policy, and leadership that has included positions at two top-50 research universities, service at a non-profit educational technology association, and a prior civil service role with the federal government. His specialties have included cybersecurity and higher education law and policy with an emphasis on the role of information technology and the future of higher education. He is best known for his role in advancing the privacy and information security professions in higher education.Building upon his law degree that first introduced him to the field of higher education law and policy, Rodney has also taken several graduate courses on the history of higher education, higher education finance, academic administration, student affairs administration, and higher education law leading to an Advanced Graduate Specialist certification in Higher Education Policy, Planning, and Administration.Rodney has experienced success as both a manager and staff professional. As a manager, he has supervised full-time professionals and administrative staff, graduate student assistants, and undergraduate students and managed budgets for several different organizations. As a staff professional, his experience ranges from teaching undergraduate and graduate students to testifying before the U.S. Congress. He is also a frequent author and speaker on topics of higher education law and policy. He has a long history of leadership roles and experiences that includes initiating and starting new programs (e.g, Project NEThics at the University of Maryland, founding member of the Association of College and University Policy Administrators, Higher Education Information Security Council for EDUCAUSE). He is also very active in the community as a commissioner and coach of youth sports programs and leader of adult ministry programs for his church.
