I’ve worked in for-profit and nonprofit medicine and have had the good fortune of being a primary negotiator representing the best interests of both hospital administrators and physician entrepreneurs in joint venture arrangements. These significant centers of influence affect courses of action for the hospital enterprise, physician group, individual patient, and population within in a defined catchment area.Being at the center of these confluences is truly captivating as all contributor groups strive to define best practices.In negotiating joint venture relationships between nonprofit hospitals and for-profit physician groups, I have found the most effective position is to embrace the spirit of collaboration, partnership, and research. My career began in radiology. Perhaps that’s emblematic of how I navigate. Seeing what’s within clearly so an appropriate course of action can be pursued.This takes patience, listening empathetically, keeping the goal in mind, and having a vision of successful outcomes when the collaboration comes together.I’ve overseen implementation of the consensus plan, too, operationalizing the vision.Other things “about” me: I have designed/built koi ponds in my personal garden and have a 25-year old koi named Submarine. I went into radiology after jamming my finger at a basketball game, had an X-ray taken, and knew I was staring at my future career. I didn’t realize I would also meet my future wife in radiology school! I used to drive race cars. I have had the privilege of two significant mentors who helped shape the course of my career, creating for me a joy in mentoring others.My diverse experience has given me an appreciation for diverse solutions. That is the elegance of reading the needs of today’s healthcare constituents to synthesize win/win solutions. It’s a vision that ultimately leads to clear direction, purposeful momentum, and the ongoing integration of today’s inpatient and ambulatory care environments.
