About Robin Shepherd
A US and UK dual national. Formerly a journalist with Reuters and the Times of London (Moscow Bureau Chief), I moved into the think tank world in 2003 and I have straddled journalism, analysis, advisory work, think tanking, and thought leadership ever since. I have written three books and contributed to/edited several others. Among other career achievements, I chaired NATO’s key North America discussion group for outreach to leaders of think tanks, NGOs, academia, and other experts for NATO’s 2022 Strategic Concept, adopted at the Madrid Summit. I am currently seeking a publisher/agent for a new book — Freedom Reloaded: Democracy’s Return to Supremacy in the Digital Age. It is a counter-consensus project arguing that our broken Western democracies will only continue to spiral downwards unless we fully embrace the digital revolution to update and revivify the free society. Mainstream Western thinkers are terrified of digital, and that is part of the problem. Meanwhile, authoritarians around the world have been quick to exploit its dark side, risking the prospect that it is they who will become the masters of the digital revolution in the 21st century. We cannot let that happen, but we will need a paradigm shift in our thinking to avoid it. This book shows how. I have held senior fellowships with several major DC-based think tanks: the Wilson Center; CSIS; the German Marshall Fund of the United States; and between 2007 and 2009 I ran the Europe Programme at Chatham House in London. Some of my main areas are Russia/Ukraine/Central eastern Europe - I speak Russian, Slovak, Czech, Ukrainian, as well as French - Israel/Middle East, the European Union; transatlantic relations; China; Hong Kong; Taiwan; global democracy; democracy in the digital revolution; cyber security; macro economics; geo-politics; and the whole panoply of issues related to international security. Please feel free to drop me a line!
