I\'ve spent 40 years making complex systems understandable across domains—from academic research to enterprise software to embodied movement, and now AI. Across each stage, the work has been the same: making complex systems intelligible without reducing what makes them work. I began in research publications with the Society of Management Accountants, working across academics, reviewers, and practitioners. The challenge wasn’t just translating content—it was representing complex ideas without losing rigor. This revealed a pattern: Systems rarely fail due to lack of information. They fail when representation doesn’t match how systems are understood. In the 1990s, I moved into enterprise software with Shawware and Marcam, leading marketing communications for CMMS. In practice, this meant translation— • software architecture → business value• technical systems → operational use• global teams → coordination People don’t struggle with complexity itself. They struggle when explanation structure doesn’t match system structure. Since 2001, I’ve worked in movement through danceScape, co-founded with Beverley Cayton-Tang. As Canadian and North American Ballroom Champions, we’ve spent 25+ years helping people develop coordination through dance. The same issue appears: dynamic, time-based coordination is often taught using static concepts. Representational mismatch. Today, these threads converge in my independent research through the Tang Papers. This work develops frameworks for how systems: • form • stabilize • break down • are experienced A central insight: Systems don’t fail because they lack capability.They fail when coordination collapses under scale, speed, or abstraction.
