ABOUT ROBERT SUNDERLAND FIOL
I’m a Director and Senior Risk Professional at Blueprint Project Solutions. I work with Defence, Energy and Infrastructure teams to make risk management genuinely useful, not just a reporting exercise. For me, it’s about turning uncertainty into clear insight that helps people make better decisions.I focus on building risk approaches that actually improve delivery. That means clear governance, real ownership, practical escalation, and making sure risk connects properly with schedule, cost, change and performance reporting. If it doesn’t influence decisions, it’s not doing its job.I’ve led the risk function on a major Defence programme, setting the operating rhythm and executive reporting, and running sponsor-level risk and opportunity workshops. A big part of my role has been improving the quality of insight available to leaders so they can plan with confidence. I oversee both qualitative and quantitative analysis, including cost and schedule QRA, to support confidence levels, contingency decisions and option trade-offs.I have practical knowledge of planning tools including Primavera P6 and MS Project, and I’m comfortable working directly with schedules to understand logic, dependencies and critical path risk. I also use Power BI and other reporting tools to turn complex data into clear, decision-ready insight for senior stakeholders.Alongside this, I have a strong understanding of construction projects and the realities of dependencies and interfaces across the full project lifecycle. That practical grounding helps me challenge assumptions, spot integration risks early, and keep conversations focused on what will actually affect delivery.I’m used to working alongside Programme Directors, PMOs, commercial and engineering leads in high-assurance environments. I also care about building capability. I enjoy coaching teams, creating practical guidance aligned to ISO and APM good practice, and delivering training that helps teams use risk as a performance tool rather than just maintaining a register. Before moving into consulting, I spent over 20 years in the Royal Air Force in senior operational leadership roles. That experience shaped how I work today: calm under pressure, focused on delivery, and clear about priorities. If you’re delivering complex programmes in Defence, Energy or Infrastructure and want risk to be a genuine advantage rather than a compliance exercise, I’d be glad to connect.
