ABOUT SHANI ROBERTSON
Shani Robertson is a Registered Midwife, certified health education specialist, social change advocate, researcher and consultant. She has worked with corporations, and national and international NGOs on issues of health care for the uninsured, human rights, HIV/AIDS and sexual health. Since 2006, Shani has been extensively involved in HIV/AIDS-related research and health education of youth and marginalized groups. She conducted one of Toronto’s first studies on the challenges Black women ages 15-29 face regarding their sexual well-being and HIV risk, and continues to focus on research that impacts marginalized communities in Canada. Using an evidence-based approach to social marketing, Shani has developed social marketing campaigns that serve to educate targeted members of the public to be aware of their health, and the need to support the human rights of others. As an educator, she created a workshop series that continues to educate young women about their sexual health and HIV risk, as a supporting piece to the social marketing campaigns. In addition to research, education and social marketing, Shani has also conducted formative and summative evaluations for organizations and programs. Shani believes in the value of multi-disciplinary teams, especially those which are comprised of persons from varying cultural backgrounds as they offer the global lens needed to effectively address any issue.
