Rob Sysak has been the Executive Director of the West Queen West BIA in Toronto for the past 10 years. During his tenure the BIA has had significant success in addressing the commercial and social needs of the area and has become one of the most admired BIAs in Ontario.The area itself was deemed to be the not only Toronto’s coolest neighbourhood by the BBC and Lonely Planet but was named the 2nd hippest neighbourhood in the world by Vogue magazine in 2015. The running of the BIA isn’t quite that glamourous, however. It entails working with the residents, businesses and various levels of government and bureaucracies to conform to existing bylaws and ordinances and working to change them when necessary. Many days are filled with helping businesses fill out necessary forms for such things as extended hours for special occasions. Other weeks are spent organizing and promoting one time BIA festivals and events as well as ongoing promotions for retailers, restaurants, cafes and galleries. Rob sits on the board of TABIA as well as the OBIAA and has appeared before the Toronto City Council numerous times to represent the small business community of the GTA on such issues as graffiti management, street vending and taxation. He has been instrumental in the implementation of the city’s Designing Digital Main Street
