About Robert Stewart
I am deeply passionate about advancing patient care through the integration of engineering, science, and radiation biophysics into clinical practice. My intellectual curiosity spans multiple disciplines, driving my work in radiation oncology and related industries to transform innovative concepts into meaningful clinical and industrial applications. One of my most significant achievements is leading the development and implementation of intensity modulated neutron therapy (IMNT) as a novel treatment modality at the University of Washington (UW). This decade-long effort encompassed facility upgrades, the creation of new patient-specific quality assurance (PSQA) technologies, and advancements in treatment planning through close collaboration with industry partners. Since its clinical introduction in October 2022, IMNT has been used to treat over 100 cancer patients, demonstrating its potential to overcome radiation resistance in low-LET therapies such as electrons, photons, and protons. My contributions to fundamental radiation research, biophysics, and radiation oncology are reflected in a diverse and widely cited publication record. These include research on radiation-induced DNA damage, the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of high-LET ions, bystander effects, oxygen effects, and DNA repair. Models developed by my team continue to shape the field, bridging computational radiation biology with both clinical and industrial applications.Beyond research, I am deeply committed to education and mentorship. I strive to inspire students, residents, and colleagues by fostering a shared passion for science and patient care. With substantial cross-disciplinary expertise, I excel in building collaborations among clinicians, researchers, and industry leaders, driving innovation in radiation oncology.
