About Robert Ricigliano

In 2024, in addition to my duties at The Omidyar Group, I have took on the role of Network Director of the Governance Futures Network (GFN). The Network acts as a global circulatory system for transformative governance innovations - working to bridge the gap between the urgent crises of today’s democracies with healthier models of governance not yet imagined.I am driven by the idea that it’s possible to create lasting social change. Even in the most complex environments, facing seemingly intractable challenges, I believe we can work together to develop solutions that improve the lives of people and communities. After years dedicated to peacebuilding in violent conflict zones around the world from Iraq and Afghanistan to Cambodia, Colombia, and South Africa, among others my aspirations led me to systems and complexity thinking where I began exploring the tools and practices that can help us achieve positive and sustainable societal-level change. This work guided me to The Omidyar Group, where I currently work with a family of organizations and a community of people who are dedicated to consistently learning from successes and failures and who share a vision of what the world could be. I am focused on finding practical changes in how we think and work in service of building a more equitable, prosperous future.I’m privileged to have had so many powerful experiences throughout my career – serving on the first U.S. team to teach negotiation at the Soviet Foreign Ministry\'s Diplomatic Academy in Moscow, training diplomats and other government officials from Africa, Europe, Asia, and North America, and shaping numerous peace processes by mediating back-channel dialogue among leaders. I also had rewarding experiences in the classroom sharing my passion for systems thinking. Whether it was teaching negotiation and dialogue for the Harvard Negotiation Project or co-founding a graduate program on sustainable peacebuilding, I have always been inspired by moving from theory to practice, and from practice into theory.
