Problem: Traditional hardware often loosens resulting in lost compression. For 4 to 16 weeks, weight bearing and exercise must be restricted or the hardware will fail to prevent excessive interfragmentary movement, resulting in non-union, malunion, hardware failure, or screws may back out with subsequent impingement on the tissues. Unfortunately, movement restriction often leads to complications such as disuse atrophy of muscles and bones, shortening of tendons, and formation of blood clots. Blood thinners may need to be taken to avoid blood clots. Recovery is prolonged, often painful and sometimes results in permanent loss of flexibility or range of joint movement. High levels of pain during the prolonged recovery may result in addiction to pain medication, another complication expected to be substantially reduced using BMG hardware. Fractures may be a death sentence in aged people and horses. Aged people with major fractures (such as fractures of the hip or femur), may never recover from impacts of prolonged immobilization and concomitant muscle atrophy. Horses with long bone fractures (radius or tibia) are often euthanized on humane grounds due to limited ability to address these fractures using currently available surgical implants.
